Engaging with Political Advisers

Staffers are the trusted advisers, subject matter experts, and humble servants who guide their bosses everyday.

Staffers are the trusted advisers, the subject matter experts, and the humble servants who guide their bosses through political hotspots everyday. It's no secret that having them on your side is a key ingredient to campaign success.

The good news is that wowing a staffer is not a dark art, it's common sense.

Get to know them before you need a favour

This can be as simple as picking up the phone and introducing yourself, or taking them out for a coffee. If doing the latter, be clear that the purpose of your meeting is a 'meet-and-greet' so expectations are managed. Also, avoid Parliament sitting days which are busy and unpredictable.

Ask what else they're working on, and offer to help

It's easy to forget there's life beyond an issue you've been working on for a while, but this couldn't be further from the truth for the average staffer who juggles many, often complex issues at a time. If you can offer an insight, a piece of helpful research or a contact, let them know. If you can't, just sympathise!

Be proactive in keeping them in the loop

Although it's particularly important to get on the front foot during crises or bad press, this isn't the only time outside of campaigns to get in touch with staffers. Did your organisation win a gender diversity award? Shoot an email to the adviser to the Minister for Women. It will not only be noted by the office, but will likely sent down to the Department for their records and may even reappear in future briefing notes to the Minister. Win!

Take notes that record the human matter, as well as the subject matter

Did you form a bond over the Swans in the Parliament House lobby? Capture that intel and easily strike a conversation the next time you meet up.

Generally being pleasant, mindful and helpful will get you a long way towards forming a relationship of trust and mutual respect with a staffer.
